Welcome to 4D!

Term 4 Newsletter

Dear Parents,
Welcome back to Term 4 at St Ives Park. This term begins with the Years 3 and 4 visiting the Power House Museum to begin our Science and Technology unit on Electricity and Magnets. Term 4 will have all students working very hard prior to and during the assessment period which will commence in week 4. As summer is upon us it is very important that students are sent to school with their school hat, sunscreen and a water bottle.

Maths and Literacy groups commenced immediately on Tuesday of week 1 this term. As Di Geraghty is still on sick leave, Jennifer Scott will take the role of providing extra assistance during reading, spelling and maths group sessions.

Maths groups will continue with the same formula as previous terms. The students will be involved in a range of practical and written activities in the areas of number, patterns and algebra, Space and Geometry, chance and measurement. Miss Scott, will continue to work with those Year 4 students who need extra assistance with their maths skills and knowledge.

As mentioned previously the Science and Technology topic for this term is Electricity and Magnetism. The students will discover new and interesting ways to experiment and observe the use of magnets and electricity. The excursion to the Powerhouse Museum is an excellent opportunity to motivate the children and arouse their curiosity.

PSSA teams in both cricket and modballl will train on Thurs and Fri mornings with competition on Friday afternoons. Fitness will continue is per normal on Tuesdays and students will wear their sports uniforms on both these days. Non PSSA children will be participating in gymnastics this term.

Homework will continue to be sent home in grid format and the children are required to complete a range of school based activities that relate closely to the work they are doing in class each week. The home readers program will continue but it is up to each student to keep reading as often as possible. Parents are encouraged to monitor their child’s reading each night and sign a record sheet showing evidence of the child’s efforts. The homework will be given out on a Monday and is due back every second Friday (fortnightly).

Please check that your child has the following list of supplies to ensure a smooth working environment.
• Rubber (1 only, no Smiggles please!)
• Sharpener
• Red and blue pens (by now most students have their pen licence!)
• 30cm ruler (that does not bend) and a big glue stick
• Colour pencils, textas or crayons
• Pocket Dictionary/thesaurus
• Fruit for our daily fruit break

Please be sure to send in notes for full day and partial absences immediately on return to school. Also any extended absences for holidays whereby your child will be away at least 15 school days needs to be handed in well before leaving. SIPPS needs to seek permission from the Department of Education to grant exemptions from school. This became a new legal requirement at the beginning of 2007. If your child is late or needs to leave early he/she needs to be signed in/out by you the parent. Children are not allowed to sign the register.

If you have any concerns or general questions about anything happening in class or at the school feel free to contact me. I’ll be happy to help in anyway possible. I look forward to a very productive term with everyone finishing the year off positively.

Regards,

Guy Davies.
