Term 4 Newsletter

Dear Parents,
It was wonderful to see the students so refreshed and ready for school after the holiday break. We look forward to a very busy and productive term.

A few notes
*We extend a warm welcome to our new student, Misaki and her family.
*At the end of last term our students presented their ‘Transport’ projects to the class. We were overwhelmed by the effort that had gone into the individual projects and by the enthusiasm the students displayed towards the ‘Transport’ unit of work, as a whole.
*Unfortunately our glue stick supplies are depleted. It would be greatly appreciated if each student could bring in a glue stick to see us through till the end of the year.

Here is a brief outline of the plan for this term.

Reading
In Term 4 reading groups will continue each morning between 9:20-10:10am from Monday to Thursday.
Thank you to all those parents who have been able to help in our classroom. Again, a special thank you to Catherine
for organising the reading group roster.

Spelling
As usual homework, incorporating the spelling list, will be sent home on Mondays and tested on Fridays. The spelling rules for this term will include: letter patterns such as ar, ay, oy, ir, consonants such as ld, silent t and wh, and the homophones to/two/too, by/buy, one/won and stair/stare.

Talking and Listening/News
We will continue to have news topics on alternate weeks. It is very helpful if you are able to hear your child practise their news topic so that they are fully prepared for news day.

Here are our talking topics for the rest of the term:

Week 1 My Holidays

week 2 Free Choice

week 3 A story from before I was five

week 4 Free Choice

week 5 Select an animal and explain how it communicates (sight, smell, touch etc)

week 6 free Choice

week 7 Mystery Bag object

week 8 Free Choice

week 9 No news ..3 day week

Handwriting
We are continuing to practise wave pattern letters O, G, Q, D, E, S and revising numerals.

Maths
As well as expanding and revising number skills the students will also focus on time, 3D objects, chance, length and mass during Term 4.

Science
Within the science unit titled ‘Let’s Communicate’ the students will investigate various forms of verbal and non-verbal communication. Signs, symbols and text together with facial expressions and body language will be explored. How humans and other animals use their different senses to communicate will also be studied.

HSIE (Human Society in its Environment)
Written texts, oral histories and artefacts will be examined in the HSIE unit of work, ‘Families, Past and Present’. Students will discuss special events and people in their lives. We will also look at where student’s families come from and different kinds of family structures.
As part of this unit we would like the students to hear about a special event that has occurred in several of our class families (e.g. moving countries, getting married etc.) Please let us know if you could spare a few minutes of your time to speak to the class about this event.

PDHPE
As before fitness will be held on Tuesdays.
The students will be participating in the very popular Gymnastics program on Fridays.
Students are required to wear their sports uniform on both Tuesdays and Fridays as normal.

Library
Library will continue to be on Friday. Please send in a bag for library books.

Homework
Readers and spelling homework will continue to be sent home on Mondays. Homework is due in on Fridays for marking (when possible). Maths Share activities will continue to be completed and exchanged by students at their own rate.

Absences
Please be sure to send in notes for full day and partial absences immediately on return to school. Also any extended absences (15 school days or more) needs to be applied for well before leaving. SIPPS needs to seek permission from the Department of Education to grant exemptions from school. This became a new legal requirement at the beginning of 2007.
Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns or questions. You can phone the office or send a note so that a convenient time for an appointment can be organised.

Regards,
Melissa Field and Jeanie Gatt.

1G Newsletter
Term 1, 2009
Dear Parents,
Welcome to Year One.
Although the school year is less than two weeks old, your children are quickly settling into the routines and structures of life in Year One.
I am looking forward to meeting with you at the Parent Information Evening on Tuesday, February 17th.
On that night, an overview of the term’s academic program will be outlined together with details relating to classroom organisation, homework and the timetabling of reading groups.
Your involvement in 1G’s reading program, both at school and at home is greatly appreciated. Reading group volunteers, class parents and a parent contact list will hopefully be initiated at this meeting.
In the interim, I would just like to note that 1G has Library and Sport on Friday, while Scripture is to remain on Wednesday.
The children are to wear their sports uniform on Tuesday for fitness and on Friday for sport.
Reading groups will commence in week four, as will the allocation of home readers and homework.
Your child’s news day is _______________.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns or questions.
Regards
Jeanie Gatt
