Term 4 Newsletter

Dear Parents,
Welcome to Term 4! This is a busy term especially given that it is only 9 weeks long!
We begin the term with a very exciting time as the children help with the responsibility of helping our new kindergarten enrolments enjoy a positive school experience in our Kindy Orientation Program.
I will be taking 2 weeks Long Service Leave from November 2nd. Mrs Lizzie Simunovic will continue my program for this period. I am sure the children will benefit from Lizzie’s creativity and enthusiasm. I know she is happy to continue our usual routines in the classroom and will welcome your participation.

English
Thank you to parents who have supported our literacy groups in the classroom. These groups will continue Monday to Thursday each week and are designed to specifically cater for the diverse learning needs of each student. If you would like to be included on the helpers roster please let me know. I welcome your participation and the children certainly benefit from your efforts. It has been wonderful to see the children really “taking risks” with their reading and writing and developing in confidence. Please continue to promote good routines by reading with your child and changing home readers regularly.

Talking and Listening topics talks for this term:
Week 2 My House Give address, describe your house, garden and street. What is your most
special place? Bring a photo if you like.
Week 3 Free choice
Week 4 My favourite season. Describe your favourite season and give reasons why it is your favourite.
Week 5 Free choice
Week 6 My Australia. On a map of Australia (provided) show where you live and label and discuss other places that are important to you and your family eg a holiday or where someone special lives.
Week 7 Free Choice
Week 8 How my family celebrates Christmas or another celebration
Week 9 Free choice

Maths
The children will continue to work in ability groups for number activities. They will have opportunities to work at open ended tasks and be challenged at the appropriate level. Hands on activities to support the development of concepts in measurement, space and geometry, patterns and algebra, and data are another important focus. Please try to change your Maths Share activity each week.

Human Society and its Environment
This term’s HSIE unit is “Being Australian” In this unit, the children will identify the customs, practices, symbols, languages and traditions of their family and other families.

Science and Technology
Our science unit for the term is “The Senses”. Mrs Weston will support the development of this unit with a variety of valuable learning experiences each Monday.
I am sure you have had much positive feedback from your child about the fun learning experiences Mrs Gifford is providing in their weekly computer lessons. The children are becoming familiar with the process of logging on to the school’s network of computers using their own unique password. This account will stay with them throughout their time in the Department of Education. Their “Kids Space” can also be accessed from home. It includes a selection of age appropriate games.
Go to the DET website (www.det.nsw.edu.au) then click the link Det Staff Portal. Enter your user name and password supplied.

Personal Development, Health, Physical Education
This term the children will benefit from the expertise of Coach Grant and his Gym2U program. Our first session is this Friday and I expect it will be very enthusiastically received! We will continue to focus on the development of appropriate social skills and positive self esteem. Fitness for Kindergarten will continue on Tuesdays each week.

Creative and Performing Arts
Activities are planned to integrate HSIE and science themes towards the development of fine motor skills and creative expression. Art and craft activities help provide a stimulating learning environment for the children. They are always keen to show off their artistic talents so be sure to visit the classroom when you next have the opportunity.

Absences
Please be aware that the DET has very strict procedures about absences. ALL absences need to be followed up with a written explanation (i.e. sickness or leave).
Extended absences of 3 weeks or more need DET approval and should be applied for well in advance of the proposed leave period.

Punctuality
I encourage you to have your child at school by 9:10am. Late arrivals need to be recorded at the office before joining the class. Children who are late can be significantly disadvantaged when activities have been explained and expectations are set. It is also very unsettling for the rest of the class.

Weekly Routines
Monday Mrs Weston in KA from 12 noon. Homework and notes go home.
Tuesday Fitness
Wednesday Scripture
Thursday Library
Friday Gym2U program. Computer with Mrs Gifford
Please return homework

Please let me know if you have any concerns as soon as they arise. If you would like ideas on how to support your child’s learning at home I am always happy to help.
I look forward to another enjoyable and productive partnership this term!

Regards,
Kathie Anderson
